The beginning

Director Jan Jaap Lems first encountered petrified wood in 2004 in his time as a teacher at the Dutch International School in Jakarta, Indonesia. On the square in front of the school, a small market was organized every Friday for the parents and staff of the school. Often there was also Mr. Cecep with small pieces of petrified wood. Lems asked if he could come to the sites where petrified wood was found once and one thing led to the other. Mr. Cecep is now our agent.

After 25 years of education, Lems decided it was time for something else. Since 2007 he has been importing beautiful products from petrified wood and wood from Indonesia. During the first few years, several farmers’ barns were set up as showrooms.

After a few bumps, the company burned down completely in 2012, Xyleia Natural Interiors is now located in the former showroom of Boerhof Wonen in Heeten. Mr. John Boerhof literally helped Lems by initially giving the building practically free to use.

Xyleia now has eight full-time employees in the Netherlands and seven in Indonesia.

The word “xyleia” means “wood” in Greek. Xyleia Natural Interiors specializes in exclusive pieces of furniture made from natural materials, such as wood and petrified wood. The furniture is imported from different countries in Asia. The emphasis in our products is on quality and uniqueness. Every table, every stool, every piece of furniture is unique and of great beauty.
