🧼 Petrified Wood Maintenance – Tips for Each Application
Petrified wood Petrified wood is incredibly strong, millions of years old, and a real eye-catcher in your home or garden. But how do you actually maintain this unique material? The good news: it requires little maintenance. However, there are a few things to keep in mind, especially depending on its use. In this blog post, we offer practical tips for cleaning and protecting petrified wood in various applications: from coffee tables to wash basins and from bowls to gravestones.
🛋️ 1. Coffee tables en side tables of petrified wood
Petrified wood is often used for coffee tables, side tables, or columns. The surfaces are usually polished and therefore relatively resistant to stains. However, contrary to popular belief, petrified wood is not completely impermeable: it remains somewhat porous. Liquids such as water or wine can seep into the surface and cause stains.
Fortunately, most pieces at Xyleia Petrified Wood are finished with a high-quality stone wax. This polishing layer largely seals the pores and provides extra protection against staining.
Maintenance tips:
- Clean the surface with a soft cloth and lukewarm water.
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or degreasers (such as Cif, bleach or limescale remover!).
- For extra shine and protection, you can occasionally use an acid-free natural stone oil or color-enhancing wax.
- Avoid placing hot objects (such as pans or mugs) directly on the surface. Always use coasters.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially with black petrified wood – this can lead to discolouration.
Stains? Gently dab the stain with a soft cloth and lukewarm water. Repeat this a few times if necessary. In most cases, the stain will disappear quite quickly. Unlike marble, for example, stains in petrified wood usually disappear quite quickly and rarely leave long-lasting or permanent marks.
🍽️ 2. Bowls, plates and serving boards of petrified wood
Petrified wood is also increasingly used for tableware and serving accessories. Think of plates, platters, or even tapas boards. They are not only beautiful but also hygienic: the surface doesn't absorb moisture or odors.
Maintenance tips:
- Always wash plates and bowls by hand, with warm water and a little mild dishwashing liquid.
- Avoid the dishwasher: high temperatures, aggressive salts and long periods of wet weather can damage the surface over time.
- Dry immediately after washing with a soft cloth.
- Do not use scouring pads or steel wool: these may cause scratches, especially on polished surfaces.
Extra tip: Use these items best for dry or lukewarm dishes. If you're serving something with a lot of acid (like lemon or vinegar), place a sheet of parchment paper or a small plate between them.
🪦 3. Petrified wood as gravestone or memorial
Because of its durability, petrified wood is also suitable for outdoor use, for example, as a gravestone or memorial. These stones are resistant to rain, wind, and frost, but do require periodic maintenance to remain beautiful.
Tips for outdoor maintenance:
- Rinse the stone regularly with water to remove dirt and algae growth.
- Preferably use only water and a soft brush. No pressure washer!
- In autumn: remove wet leaves, as they can leave stains.
- Avoid acidic or harsh cleaning agents – they can dull the surface.
Optional: Treating it twice a year with a natural stone protector* for outdoor use will help prevent dirt from penetrating.
* A natural stone protector is a transparent impregnating agent that makes the surface water- and dirt-repellent without altering the stone's appearance. There are versions specifically designed for outdoor use that also offer protection against moss, algae, and acid rain.
Alternative: Another effective way to protect petrified wood outdoors is with a nanocoating. This is an ultra-thin, transparent protective layer that repels dirt and water. Nanocoating offers excellent protection against moisture, deposits, and weathering, and doesn't affect the appearance of the stone. However, this treatment must be repeated approximately every two years for lasting results.

🚿 4. Washbasins of petrified wood
A petrified wood sink is a real eye-catcher in the bathroom. Because the material is completely sealed, it's highly resistant to moisture. Still, it requires a little TLC to stay beautiful for years to come.
Tips for bathroom application:
- Clean with a soft cloth and warm water. For light limescale, you can dilute natural vinegar with water (1:5 ratio), but use sparingly and always rinse thoroughly.
- Never use descaling agents, chlorine or abrasive cleaning agents.
- Dry the bowl after use to limit limescale build-up.
- If necessary, you can periodically treat the outside (if it is polished) with a colour enhancer or natural stone oil.
Note: Acid residue from toothpaste, lemon, or cosmetics can affect the surface over time. So, rinse the bowl thoroughly regularly.
📌 Summary
